It is located on the Banks of the River Dee in the community of Crathie mid-way between the towns of Ballater and Braemar on the A93. Lochnagar, the fourth highest mountain in Britain lies to the south of the estate and its distinct shape can be seen on the horizon line. The estate and building are private belonging to Her Majesty the Queen and although open to the public for certain times of the year are not public property. The building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Crathes Castle fgh0181jhp Crathes Castle July Deeside croquet lawn cirrus clouds Aberdeenshire Scotland one of the centre pieces is the walled garden of this historic property with the croquet lawn offering some of the best views of the castle and on this July day blessed with a unusual cirrus cloud formation. The building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.
