A small pull off mainly for the fishermen but gives this usually scenic view of the River at most times of the year and so far not impacted by much severe clear felling that has been depleting Upper Deeside of some of its loveliest scenery, a periodic downside of commercial forestry operations. The estate and building are private belonging to Her Majesty the Queen and although open to the public for certain times of the year are not public property. There is a complete and relatively easy walk round the loch and passing the Royal Lodge of Glas-alt-shiel on the western shore surrounded by a small forest with the highest peak of the Broad Cairn reached by walking up to and past the huge cliff face of the Dubh Loch. Passing behind the Lodge you join the path up to the waterfall and which is another route to reach the plateau surrounding Lochnagar. It is another enjoyable walk returning to the south of the Lodge and skirting round the top of Loch Muick, returning to the Spital Carpark via the Blackburn. The Spital is also the starting off point for the walk to Lochnagar Mountain via the Gelder and Saddle. The bridge is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge who had started the process making a military road system many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from the northern river bank looking to the White Mounth. Located between the estates of Balmoral, south of the river and Invercauld to its north, this view is taken from the side of the North Deeside Road just beyond Invercauld House on the road to Braemar. The bridge is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands.
