A few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. There is a distant view of the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. This view westwards is from the road west of the Maiden Stone, looking towards the Oyne Fork as the road drops down to join the main Inverurie to Huntly road. Opposite the restaurant is the road to Auchenblae passing St Palladius Church and Drumtochty Castle in Glen Drumtochty which has interesting Forest Enterprise walks through mixed mature woodland and after leaving the forest the road enters Strath Finella passing this delightful loch near Glensaugh, used for fishing and often visited by ducks and swans. In the foreground is the Black Burn of Arnbarrow and to the right is a very steep small section of road at the start of the climb up to the Cairn O’Mount which has memories for me as a child having to exit my father’s old Rover car along with my mother and relatives as it could not make it up that first little climb. An information board at the entrance of this commercial Forestry Commission forest shows extensive walks and biking routes and is also the site of Whitehills, one of Aberdeenshire’s many recumbent stone circles. These views are just to the north of the entrance to the Whitehills Stone Circle parking area.
