Maidenstone Stone Bennachie jkl8777jhp Maiden Stone carved stone spring Bennachie summit Scottish Aberdeenshire Pictish Christian relic stands by the roadside near Pitcaple and is easily accessible for the causal visit from a small lay-by carpark. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on pink granite stone and is probably one of the last carved in Grampian. It is so-called after the daughter of a local landowner who died during her elopement. During winter and spring with trees bare of foliage it is possible to see the summit of Bennachie. South Leylodge Stones jkl8124jhp South Leylodge Recumbent Flankers Stone Circle Kintore Aberdeenshire bronze Age historic ruined monument in a field [NJ766132] to the North of the dead end slip road signed Lauchintilly off the B977 Dunecht to Kintore Road. Only the flankers and recumbent appear to be left although there are several single standing stones in nearby fields, possibly monoliths from the original RSC but now useful scratching posts for cattle. Also called the South Ley Lodge RSC per Aubrey Burl’s book ref No: 98 P353 for his details regarding the site. Ian Shepherd in Exploring Scotland’s Heritage: Grampian suggests on page 145 that it might be an example of a RSC that was only that-the flankers and the recumbent and the rest of the circle was never completed. The point was also made that these stones were the first built as the largest and most important although this idea is somewhat contradicted in later studies made at Tomnaverie where these stones are thought to have been added as the final stage of closing out the monument. St Lesmo Chapel Glen Tanar 191171JHP Glen Tanar Royal Deeside St Lesmo Chapel Celtic Cross Scotland is situated in a lovely accessible valley to the south of Aboyne on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire North East Scotland. The Glen is now a much visited place with an informative Braeloine Centre with Countryside Ranger, holiday cottages, fishing and easy access to many easy walks through ancient Scottish Caledonian Pine Forest and is a popular walking and cycling route to Mount Keen. There is a public pay and display car park mid way up the metalled road across from the centre and the main walk to St Lesmo’s Chapel which is popular for weddings making use of Glen Tanar House ballroom for receptions and conferences. Kinord Cross Slab xvv2526jhp Loch Kinord Scottish Celtic Cross Cross-slab Royal Deeside Aberdeenshire lying beneath Hill of Morven and located to the north of North Deeside Road mid way the River Dee valley between Aboyne and Ballater. Nearby the loch is the Burn O'Vat an impressive gorge with vistors centre and public toilets while on the loch is a Crannog, prehistoric man made island and Osprey can sometimes be seen fishing in the tranquil waters of this SSSI. The cross slab dates from around 9th Century AD and stands near to its original location on the north shore overlooking the loch.
