Peacocks Sun Bathing qax2868jhp Butterfly peacocks sun basking dorsal reflectance concrete slab ground Deeside Scottish summer photograph taken as they fly from the buddleia’s for short periods to these spots directly in the sun here they will boost their body temperatures both from the sun and also the heat stored in this case a concrete slabon the ground. Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring. Craigton Hill Aspens bnm9890jhp Autumn Aspens golden Craigton Hill Kincardine O’Neil Deeside Scotland trees fields on a small hill west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The hill lies between Kincardine O’Neil and Torphins, a pleasant cross-country route with wonderful views of Deeside from Clachnaben, Lochnagar and Morven. It used to be possible to see Craigendarroch and the Pass of Ballater but a small forest plantation has blocked that view. We are looking northwards past the aspens over Stranduff towards the area of Mar. Banchory Autumn bnm9917jhp Banchory South Deeside road beech trees autumn colours Inverey fishing gate Kincardineshire is located near the Feugh bridge with its famous salmon leaping falls before you cross over the River Dee into Banchory coming from the south east. This is the largest Deeside town on the River Dee and is some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. One surprise was to find a Golden Ringed Dragonfly hanging from a buddleia early in the morning, no movement of any kind while I photographed it but it had gone 10 mins later when I came out again. Baby Adder Snake 0784UP34jhp Tanar Glen Deeside Scottish reptile summer adder snake young viper basking near Tanar House a Glen which is a popular setting for weddings and photographs by its loch a short walk from the well known Ballroom. Glen Tanar which lies to the south of Aboyne on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire North East Scotland. The Glen is now a very regularly visited place with Braeloine Centre with Ranger and Visitors’ Centre, holiday cottages, fishing and easy access to many easy walks through ancient Scottish Caledonian Pine Forest and is the main route to Mount Keen. I photographed the snake on the driveway entrance to the main house sunning itself on the stone chips. This particular bird was brought onto the estate as part of a selection of more interesting birds for the seasonal rough shooting and is not a native of this part of Scotland. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on.
