Rainbow Colours bnm5256jhp Rainbow colourful partial band spectrum autumn clouds hills Deeside Scotland weather photo summer afternoon sunlight and although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. This rainbow occurred after an autumn rain shower storm. The shapes, size and often awesome sense of power of clouds and often coupled with rain storms and rainbows make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible as well as the photographer. Cloud Creep Torphins xcv8831jhp Summer Scottish clouds Torphins hill creeping shrouded eerie low cloud Deeside over the Learney and Hill of Fare behind Torphins, Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland about 25 miles west of Aberdeen. This often happens during the year and is an eerie sight as the cloud creeps over the hill and moves down into the valley below and is very similar to watching a sea mist or haar creep in from the sea and move inland, something the North East Coast is prone to in the summer months. It is not unusual for Aberdeen to be shrouded in haar all day while a few miles westwards, Deeside is basking in glorious summer sunshine. So far this summer, 2018, there have not been many colourful sunsets despite some of the warmest weather for many a year. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. This one was taken on the 24th August, 2016 while there is a further selection taken earlier on the 12th.
