In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. Poldullie Brig Strathdon wyy6123jhp Poldullie Bridge River Don Upper Donside Strathdon Aberdeenshire Scotland summer historic 1715 construction by John Forbes of Invereran which withstood the 1829 flood and crosses the River Don at the Pooldhulie Pot, a small narrow curve or crook in the river. No longer used for public access to opposite bank but still an attractive single arch of 70 foot height illustrating the building skills of earlier times. It is situated between the Lonach Gathering park, near Candacraig and Bellabeg with its historic Motte and the entrances to Lost and Glenbuchat in the heart of Upper Donside. Old Brig Dee Invercauld fgh2962jhp Old Brig River Dee Invercauld Deeside Scotland summer heather stormy clouds is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the summer heather purple and although catching the sunlight the background is dark and stormy. NB This was taken with a non-digital lens and may need extra sharpening. Early Cross Banchory TO1780029jhp Banchory town early Christian cross carved granite inset watch tower Kincardineshire Royal Deeside Scotland is located on the side of the Historic Watch Tower in the main cemetery of this large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town with easily accessible forest walks and a not too strenuous walk to its summits with pleasing views of much of Royal Deeside as well as interesting views to the north and south.
