Soknopaiou Nesos & Lake Qarun 6549EG07JHP Lake Qarun Fayoum Egypt Ancient Ptolemaic Town Soknopaiou Nesos highview, also called Dimyah al-Siba, a Ptolemaic town dating through to Roman times built by with a substantial mudbrick enclosure wall partially buried surrounding the remains of a temple dedicated to Soknopaios, a form of the crocodile God Sobek. It is located in the western desert south of Cairo and is accessed by 4x4 from Faiyum and is often part of a desert trip including Qasr al-Saghah Temple. In this photo a group of archaeologists are inspecting the causeway on what was once thought to have been an island in the lake.
