Castle Fraser Snow 181011JHP Castle Fraser Snow Scenic White Tower Turrets Tree Branches Aberdeenshire Scotland dates from between 1575 and 1636 is the most elaborate z-plan castles in existence in Scotland today and was the work of two master masons or builders called Bell and Leiper. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. This is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 16 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. Any of my photographs are for scenic/tourist use only and cannot be used for product endorsement without the explicit permission of the NTS. Braemar Castle TO4290268JHP Braemar Castle Royal Deeside Military Fort River Dee Roadside Community Owned built in 1628 by John Earl of Mar was basically a pitched roof over the main tower and some turrets. Later in the 18th century the battlements and unusual star-shaped defensive curtain wall were added. It was forfeited to the crown after the 1715 rebellion and were later sold to the Farquharson’s of Invercauld and rented back to the Crown as a Hanoverian garrison post until 1831. It has a barrel vaulted ceilings, an iron yett, an open wrought iron metal grid, covering an underground dungeon with its bottle neck entrance. Since then it has been a private property until recently by Invercauld Estate and is now run as a tourist attraction by a local community trust after refurbishment with exhibitions reflecting its, and the local area history. As a private property in the control of a local charity then these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Castle will be Open again from 3rd May 2008; interior at weekends from 11-4 or by prior appointment. Hallforest Castle 186511JHP Hallforest Castle Scottish Ruin Keep Tower House Kemnay Kintore Aberdeenshire is one of few 14th Century keeps remaining in the North East and tradition is that it was built by Robert the Bruce as a hunting lodge. It was entered on the first floor by a ladder, the four floors for occupation and having embattlements has a degree of fortification. It was given to the Earl of Kintore by his father The Earl Marischal as a reward after the Battle of Bannockburn. It is now just an impressive ruin standing in the middle of a flat field adjacent top the Kintore to Kemnay road. Area to NW of these ruins was excavated in 1938 by Douglas Simpson and substantial evidence of a large and strong L shaped tower house with pink dressed granite foundations and is considered to be the remains of original castle. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with this fine Scottish medieval door and has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. Next to it is spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees.
