Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring.
