Caption: | Blackbird sunning spread wings dyke sunny Deeside Scotland summer photographtaken with a telephoto lens through the kitchen window as this female blackbird undertakes a practice attributed to them in summer days in strong sunlight. Despite research the general theory is that of maintaining its feathers possibly stimulating the Vitamin D produced in its preen-oil gland or maybe regulating its temperature on hot days. I have seen sparrows also doing a similar thing but on the ground, especially if it is sandy and wondered if it might be to do with cleaning away mites, as part of the sand bath activity-hen pheasants also seem to like this and often create their own sand bowl for regular use. |
