This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.

Caption: | Saqqara Unas Unis Wenis Pyramid ancient Egyptian King small ruinon the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and which was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC and is a considerable state of disrepair although some of the finer quality Tura limestone casing still remains. The inside is now not accessible but is one of the easiest to enter and entry by Gaston Maspero was financed by Thomas Cook & Co where a highly decorated burial chamber covered in Pyramid Texts was uncovered along with a huge basalt sarcophagus. |
