Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

During 2005 I experienced the busiest time on the Nile I had seen with convoys of cruiseboats and this photo is taken at Esna Lock where there was a delay for several hours waiting to make progress southwards. Probably in 2012 following the marked drop off in tourism following the Arab Spring and subsequent political problems scenes like this will not be happening. Silsila Quarrying EG052418JHP Egypt Photos Ancient Silsila Quarry River Nile Shrines Capstan Rock stands out sharply as the river narrows at the cult location north of Aswan and a well known marker for the Nile cruises as one nears or leaves the ancient marshland known as the Kom Ombo Basin. Nearby the distinctive large rock a remnant of the ancient quarrying are three riverside shrines of Merneptah, Ramasses 11 and Sety 1 although the later and the landing berth have been badly damaged by earthquakes many centuries ago. Includes areas of forestry where there is public access for walks such as The Deeside Way and also photographs of forest harvesting, tree cutting, and stacked logs ready for transport to the local sawmills.

The trees are firstly selected, cut, stripped of bark and branches and then laid in lines ready for harvesting. Large pile of tree trucks in various categories then await collection for transport to specialist sawmills or transportation to Norway for pulping.
