Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including such as an Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel, the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent large addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] temple for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Tanis Granite Junkyard EG077223JHP Tanis Temple Amun Granite Blocks Obelisk Column Photograph Ancient Egypt Delta site in the North once thought to be the capital Per-Ramesses created by Ramses 11 but was in fact the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Being relocated onto the Island of Agilkia on the River Nile near Aswan, to save it being flooded after the completion of the High Dam, it is perhaps one of the loveliest and most complete classic Egyptian temples to visit with a peaceful spirituality lacking in many of the land based sites. Huntly Spring Flowers asd7283jhp Huntly spring flowers trees beech River Deveron Aberdeenshire Scotland walks, near the Castle which in its present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the River Deveron near its joining the Bogie at the town of Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. In the grounds is a mort house. About ¼ mile to the south was the location of Coull Castle, a substantial fortress in the early 13th Century, of which nothing remains today. Continuing up the single lane road northwards brings you to the Slack of Tillylodge and the Queen’s viewpoint with spectacular views over Deeside towards Morven and the distant outline of Lochnagar Britain’s fourth highest mountain. Photograph shows entrance doorway from the walk up from the roadway but basic structure is a shell. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Photograph shows inside view up the relatively intact SE tower but basic structure is a shell. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. This particular image shows exaggerated converging verticals because of the closeness of the lens and despite it being an ultra wide focal length for given the situation of the castle to steep slopes it is not possible to get far enough away. The effect although not accurate or truth does increase the sense of height and scale.
