This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx

Egypt Hatshepsut Thutmosis Granite Obelisks Karnak Temple infra red film is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view of Queen Hatshepsut's Obelisk, one of two remaining standing obelisks, is from between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The obelisk of red Aswan granite is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins.

Egypt > Kom Ombo Temple (2 files)

Pictures in this gallery are of Kom Ombo Temple located by The River Nile North Of Aswan
Kom Ombo EG204329jhp
Kom Ombo Ancient Egypt hieroglyphics deep cut owl seated woman of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols.

Amarna, the ancient capital built by the heretic Pharaoh Akhetaten and his Queen Nefertiti which was later dismantled after their fall from power and much is now covered up by the desert although ongoing work Amarna Project has uncovered much of the temple area, increased the knowledge and understanding of this brief but important period in ancient Egyptian history as well as preserving and restoring much of the site.

There are also catacombs for animal mummies and many more which are still buried and unexcavated under the desert sands. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen.

Egypt > River Nile Cruise & Sites (1 file)

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
River Nile Esna Traders EG052062jhp
Egypt Nile Esna cruiseboat passengers receiving checking galabea traders boats selling water photos taken on the cruise from Luxor to Aswan and at the Esna Lock there was major congestion owing to only one lock in operation, although an additional one was being constructed. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south.

Egypt > Saqqara & Memphis (2 files)

This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.
Saqqara Pyramid & Farmland EG051179jhp
Egypt Step Pyramid Saqqarah farming palm trunk woman walking carrying head fertile green crops desert backdrop and gives a very good idea of the reason for the location of this huge sprawling necropolis built along the desert escarpment well above the inundation zone of the River Nile. The fertile land supported the communities that built and later serviced these cult areas where the Valley Temple for instance would be the receiving place for offerings in memory of a particular Pharaoh after he became a God. In this case the unique and earliest stone built tomb, the Step Pyramid of King Djoser from 2500BC, the first experiment of the later true pyramid style is seen here towering above the fertile farming land that runs alongside the whole journey from Cairo.

Aberdeen Marischal wyy8544jhp
Aberdeen Marischal College Robert Bruce Statue woman seated summer granite silver spires is one of the most recognisable buildings in the City of Aberdeen if not Scotland with its elaborate spires carved out of the silver grey granite common throughout most of Aberdeen Victorian architecture. A recent addition is the magnificent bronze statue of Robert the Bruce on his charger and also this building has a new lease of life becoming the working quarters of the City Council rather than solely being part of the University.

Crathes June Border to2040029jhp
Crathes Castle Gardens June Border visitors viewing summer sunny Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland summer view of the relayed borders in 2004 and probably the best display of flowers I have seen in the June border over the years. The June Border is the summer jewel of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant.
The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. At the bottom of the walled garden overlooking the path between the June Borders is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border with the Castle as its impressive backdrop.
