Abydos Princess & Lotus Flower 5326EG07JHP Abydos Seti Temple Ancient Egyptian carved wall relief female lotus flower at the front of the largest royal monument built in white limestone, situated at the most important and one of the oldest necropolis of ancient Egypt is the home of Osiris and the imposing structure in the photograph is The Temple of Seti/Sety 1 and added to by Ramses 11 particularly the portico and entrance courts where this beautiful carving is seen. Nubian Street Seller EG051534JHP Egyptian Aswan Nubian Village Woman Street Market Seller Lifestyle Ethnic in a Nubian House often visited on trips in feluccas on the River Nile to the Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. This village on the West Bank is more of a tourist site as against a much more genuine village on Seheil Island which is only visited usually to see the Rock Carvings. These photos were taken with a compact camera to be less intrusive and I was advised by the tour guide not to use my professional gear. No model release form was obtrained or needed for using this photo in a public place. This view of Queen Hatshepsut's Obelisk, one of two remaining standing obelisks, is from between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The obelisk of red Aswan granite is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. Karnak Ram Sphinxes EG075072jhp Karnak Temple Egypt Crio-sphinx Ram Tourist posing woman portrait Ramses statue is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. In this photo are a row of ram-headed sphinxes, known as crio-sphinxes, as they take the form of ram with a lion's body straddling a small form of the pharaoh here, Ramses 11 in the form of Osiris, in the avenue from the old harbour entry to the temple with the first pylon in the background. The sphinxes were probably originally constructed by Amenhotep 11 or Horemheb but their identity replaced by Ramses 11 and even later again changed by Pinedjem 1, an evolution possibly spanning some 300 years. An unknown visitor poses for her partner. Kom Ombo EG204329jhp Kom Ombo Ancient Egypt hieroglyphics deep cut owl seated woman of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Amarna, the ancient capital built by the heretic Pharaoh Akhetaten and his Queen Nefertiti which was later dismantled after their fall from power and much is now covered up by the desert although ongoing work Amarna Project has uncovered much of the temple area, increased the knowledge and understanding of this brief but important period in ancient Egyptian history as well as preserving and restoring much of the site. Tuna el-Gebel Tomb of Isadora 6290EG07JHP Necropolis Tomb Isadora Mummy Ancient Egyptian Desert Minya Tuna el-Gebel is City of the Dead with various chapels, temples, and this is the slightly morbid Tomb of Isodora a young woman who was drowned and whose mummy is on show inside. There are also catacombs for animal mummies and many more which are still buried and unexcavated under the desert sands. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
River Nile Esna Traders EG052062jhp Egypt Nile Esna cruiseboat passengers receiving checking galabea traders boats selling water photos taken on the cruise from Luxor to Aswan and at the Esna Lock there was major congestion owing to only one lock in operation, although an additional one was being constructed. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south. The fertile land supported the communities that built and later serviced these cult areas where the Valley Temple for instance would be the receiving place for offerings in memory of a particular Pharaoh after he became a God. In this case the unique and earliest stone built tomb, the Step Pyramid of King Djoser from 2500BC, the first experiment of the later true pyramid style is seen here towering above the fertile farming land that runs alongside the whole journey from Cairo. Saqqara Archaeological Dig EG051159jhp Saqqara Unas Causeway Excavation Dig Leiden Dutch archaeologists Egypt cemetery that I came across near the restored walkway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs near the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits. Several New Kingdom were uncovered in this Dutch work and the site is now open to the public including Tombs of Horemheb, Maya and Meryt. Aberdeen Marischal wyy8544jhp Aberdeen Marischal College Robert Bruce Statue woman seated summer granite silver spires is one of the most recognisable buildings in the City of Aberdeen if not Scotland with its elaborate spires carved out of the silver grey granite common throughout most of Aberdeen Victorian architecture. A recent addition is the magnificent bronze statue of Robert the Bruce on his charger and also this building has a new lease of life becoming the working quarters of the City Council rather than solely being part of the University. Crathes June Border to2040029jhp Crathes Castle Gardens June Border visitors viewing summer sunny Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland summer view of the relayed borders in 2004 and probably the best display of flowers I have seen in the June border over the years. The June Border is the summer jewel of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. At the bottom of the walled garden overlooking the path between the June Borders is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border with the Castle as its impressive backdrop.
