The sandstone temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte was built by Thutmosis 111, Amenhotep 11 and Tuthmosis 1V. One of several small antiquities visited during a Lake Nasser cruise it has some coloured wall reliefs still intact and is then fallowed after a short walk to the Rock Cut Temple of al-Derr. This is visited enroute to the necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel is City of the Dead with various chapels, temples and catacombs for animal mummies and many more which are still buried and unexcavated under the desert sands. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel obtaining its water from a deep well. It is thought at Maidum pyramid was the first smooth sided success evolving the Step Pyramid design from Saqqara. Now held to be started by Huni, last King of the 3rd Dynasty and completed by his son Sneferu so dating from around 2600BC. Latest theories suggest it collapsed possibly before it was completed evidenced by human remains found under the rubble. This view is looking up the causeway now covered in sand. You can also enter the interior of the pyramid down a long descending corridor of 57m into the natural rock under the pyramid where a short shaft allows access into the burial chamber with its impressive limestone lined corbelled roof. Near by is Mastaba No 17 into which you also access, torch advised, in which is a sarcophagus larger than the one in the King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid at Giza. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges. In the distance can be seen the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie.
