Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

A SSSI it is a wonderful area for wildlife, has a long sandy beach stretching northwards from the river underneath huge cliffs and easy access ends at an area of huge rocks which delight children at low tide with rock pools full of fascinating marine life. This photo is of the cliff path from the village of St Cyrus nearest the Church with some late autumn colour and is one of two routes down to the beach. The cliffpath was started in 1882 by Mr George Ross, my great-grandfather.

The southern stretch of the beach near mouth of the River Esk is a Nature Reserve with guided walks and ranger services.

Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring.

Dragonfly golden ringed hawker cordulgaster boltonii wings eyes buddleia hanging Deeside Scottish summer photograph taken with a macro lenses as it appears to hang attached to the buddleia flowers possibly asleep or resting. It made no movement when I photographed it and when I blew gently on it remained completely still; I thought it had died and was stuck to the buddleia however after I returned a few minutes later it had disappeared. I checked the ground to see if it had fallen but it was no where to be seen. I had seen a large dragonfly flying the day before around the area although I was unable to get close enough to identify it. The main source of natural water is a small stream and there are some stagnant pools in the nearby forest where deep tyre tracks from tree harvesters had operated a few years before.

Blackbird sunning spread wings dyke sunny Deeside Scotland summer photograph taken with a telephoto lens through the kitchen window as this female blackbird undertakes a practice attributed to them in summer days in strong sunlight. Despite research the general theory is that of maintaining its feathers possibly stimulating the Vitamin D produced in its preen-oil gland or maybe regulating its temperature on hot days. I have seen sparrows also doing a similar thing but on the ground, especially if it is sandy and wondered if it might be to do with cleaning away mites, as part of the sand bath activity-hen pheasants also seem to like this and often create their own sand bowl for regular use.

Visible often from the public footpath and often by the water’s edge watching for small fish in pools by the raging torrents of water that cascade through the rocks beneath the Feugh Bridge near the town of Banchory, 18 miles west of Aberdeen on Royal Deeside. The River Feugh is a tributary of the River Dee.
