Alongside the road bordering the field dykes or stone walls with a mixture of wild flowers such as foxgloves, harebells, the yellow cat’s ear and spear thistles, with their colours adding to the summer colours in this part of rural Deeside. Huntly Spring Flowers asd7284jhp Huntly Castle spring flowers trees beech River Deveron Aberdeenshire Scotland walks, the present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the river near its joining the Bogie at the town of Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. Corse Castle Tower wyy 4115jhp Corse Castle Aberdeenshire Scotland Mar Neil Forbes Clan Round Tower is located off B9119 Tarland road-take O’Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Given that nearby Craigievar Castle is closed during 2008/9 for restoration this might fill a gap as part of the same family and very much in their historical area of Aberdeenshire. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Huntly Tower Side TO173058JHP Huntly Castle Winter Snow Tower White Sunny Trees Historic Scotland Aberdeenshire near River Deveron, the present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the river near its joining the Bogie at the town of Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.
