Aswan Nubian Museum Chapel EG052963JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Chapel of Usersatet Viceroy of Kush during reign of Amenhotep 11 and was rock hewn beneath Qasr Ibrim in sandstone during 18th Dynasty. The figures represent l-r Goddess Satest, Amenhotep and Horus of Aniba and now housed in this modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Interior paintings are in colour and general preservation is good. It is short walk from Amadah, the Temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte and slightly further along is the the Temple of el-Derr. These three sites are usually visited on one visit from the cruiseboat and do involve some walking on desert sand often in extreme heat. Kalabsha Carving EG961586jhp Kalabsha Temple Bayt-al-Wali carving Ramasses wall triumph Viceroy relocated Egypt entrance columns water High Dam is visited either privately from Aswan or part of a Lake Nasser cruise. In both cases the approach is by motorboat being located on an island which is impressive with the pylon facing the landing berth and a large flight of steps. On the left is a small Roman kiosk called Qertassi dedicated to the Goddess Hathor and at the rear of the main temple is a small temple from Ramasses 11 period carved out of a rock face although again relocated from near the original site of Kalabsha, some 40 km upstream on the banks of the original River Nile. All these three sites would have been flooded following the creation of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960’s.
