Tuna el-Gebel Buried Buildings 6310EG07JHP Necropolis Tuna el-Gabal Ruins Mudbrick Buildings Pilgrim Houses Desert Sand is City of the Dead with various chapels, temples and catacombs for animal mummies and many more which are still buried as in this photo near the Temple of Thoth and unexcavated under the desert sands. The site is centred on the Temple, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheelhouse as illustrated in this photo obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. Tanis Amun Buried Stele EG077218JHP Tanis Temple Amun Stele Ramses Hieroglyphs Cartouche Photo Egyptian Delta site located in Northern Egypt and once thought to be the capital created by Ramses 11 but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Although the town is now bypassed for the main route north to Huntly and Inverness it is still the hub for one of the main routes north to Banff and is an expanding commuter location for Aberdeen itself with road and railway connections. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day.
