This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.

The fertile land supported the communities that built and later serviced these cult areas where the Valley Temple for instance would be the receiving place for offerings in memory of a particular Pharaoh after he became a God. In this case the unique and earliest stone built tomb, the Step Pyramid of King Djoser from 2500BC, the first experiment of the later true pyramid style is seen here towering above the fertile farming land that runs alongside the whole journey from Cairo. The property is accessed off the A97 Ballater/Huntly road and is open all the year round and is an unmanned property at which no entrance fee is applicable. Continuing along this road in the direction of Huntly Kildrummy Castle is the next property visited. H Tree Finzean bnm4263jhp H Tree branch Finzean road Feughside interesting Deeside pine tree natural on the Finzean to Forest Birse road with its wide coverage of silver birch trees a popular drive and picnic area to the westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. Bearing right from Finzean this road crosses to Aboyne and Deeside via Ballogie. This tree I remember as a child over 50 years ago as being a Henderson my father showed it to the family on our car trips to picnics in the Forest of Birse and of course explained it was nature recognising our surname. Not sure if it was a deliberate act or just natural piece of luck and it is shame to see the right hand tree trunk appears to be dying. Linn Dee Braemar fgh2980jhp Linn River Dee Gorge Old tree trunk Glen Aberdeenshire Scotland dramatic dangerous bridge is as far west as the metal road goes in Glen Dee and the Linn is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl or doubling back taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge and as far as the new National Trust for Scotland carpark. Please note that with this photo extra sharpening maybe needed as it was taken with an old prime 24mm lenses which does not have the ideal resolution of the D700 DSLR.
