This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx

This photo is of the exterior walls at the east corner which is accessed either through the Bubastite Portal or walking back from Khonsu Temple or perhaps the Sacred Lake. It is now an integral part of the largest religious complex on the East Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in Egypt but when first built would have been isolated as the first pylon of Nectanebo was constructed later. Ramesses 111 Temple was a barque shrine dedicated to Amun in his two most recognised forms, Amun-Re and Amun-re-Kamutef, King of the Gods and Karnak and who is before the harim. On the exterior walls on its western face it has a large scale scene of many boats as they might have been seen during the annual river procession along the Nile from Luxor Temple to Karnak. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. Aswan Souk InfR EG982426jhp Aswan Souk Bazaar Egypt Egyptians people infra red film shopping near the promenade is full of colourful street stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. This allowed photos to be taken in beautiful golden early morning light which was particularly useful in highlighting some of the rich wall reliefs. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast which has happened to me twice now at this temple. Karnak Temple Ptah EG053555jhp Temple Ptah Karnak ancient Egyptian gates Ptolemaic Thutmosis entrance hieroglyphs which is located inside the north enclosure wall of the Karnak Complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a delightful small temple and very seldom frequented so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. Constructed by Thutmosis 111 during his reign 1500-1450BC it shows continuous repair and additions through until the Ptolemaic period while inside the small sanctuaries are broken granite states of Ptah and Sekhmet. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast and my batteries also ran out just as I was doing the interior photographs and tut tut, no spares. This view of the entrance to the Temple of Amun built by Ramasses 11 is taken from adjacent to the Royal Necropolis and is the entrance to the main part of the site but there other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring.
