Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora aucf14001jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish colours centre red rays treetops west Aberdeenshire Deeside photographed near Kincardine O'Neil on Royal Deeside west of Aberdeen and started in the early morning 21st November 2003, 25 miles west of Aberdeen. This followed a major storm on the 20th and with hindsight it was the biggest I have since on Deeside to date, 2018. This digital photo was taken at 02.58.25hrsUT for 17secs and these cf140 digital photos were taken at 1600ISO. The 7 photos in this cf140 sequence were taken in the space of 5mins. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 second mark at 1600ISO which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. In hindsight this was to be one of the last major storms I witnessed on Deeside to date, 2018 and it continued all evening with a sequence of later photos taken over the Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle near Tarland from 22.00 hrs until after midnight. I had to leave Crooktree at 18.30 to teach at Aboyne where my photography students got dragged out to witness the continuing display. This digital photo was taken at 18.15.02hrsUT for 15secs and these cf137 digital photos were taken at 800ISO, possibly realising with this new card that the previous 100ISO was far to low. The 19 photos in this cf137 sequence were taken in the space of 15 mins as photos were being taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film photos started at around 17.40hrsUT. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 15.30hrs. Aurora First Digital auSM3916jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish red North waning winter March 2003 Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland taken on the morning of the 30th March 2003 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo was taken at 00.35hrsUT showing a waning display behind treetop aligned North and was taken at the end of the second evening痴 activity after I stopped using slide film around 23.40hrs UT. This photo was taken with a Fuji Finepix S2 digital camera, the first time I used a digital camera for Aurora photography and a major departure from the years of using 35mm slide film. It was set at an ISO of 1600 to match the same sensitivity used for slide film, push developing 400asa Fuji to 1600asa with exposures set around the 20 second mark and lens aperture of f2.8 and the quality results i.e. noise factor was better than a corresponding grain pattern with pushed slide film. This particular photo was exposed for 11 secs with a 19mm focal length. Deeside Aurora au911436ajhp Aurora Borealis Scotland October 1991 Proton burst corona zenith rays treetops pink red green Inchmarlo Deeside Aberdeenshire taken in the early morning around 00.45hrs BST on 2nd October 1991 at Inchmarlo near Banchory, 18 miles west of Aberdeen looking to the north. An active display and this photo was one of three taken on a journey back from delivering prints for the Deeside Piper in Banchory. This session was a continuation of activity during the evening/night of the 1st October which had started around 21.00hrs BST. I had spotted activity over Torphins and the Hill of Fare on the way to Banchory via Sluie where I saw rays above the forest. Returning from Banchory I saw a strong single beam or ray going straight up over Inchmarlo so pulled off the road at the rough layby just by the speed zone west of Inchmarlo beyond the Craiglash Road. Suddenly this large coronal zenith appeared, swirling around the vortex and lasted long enough for me to take the last three exposures left on the film and then it faded as quickly as it appeared. It has been suggested as being a proton burst which would relate to the single large beam that preceded it. Later activity was photographed after I returned to Crooktree around 01.00hrs BST. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP11 processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2 and usually 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Banff Winter Sunbeam UP041262jhp Banff clouds stormy rays beams sunbeam band searchlight winter sunlight Aberdeenshire Scotland taken on a visit to this visitor attraction on the banks of the River Deveron in large public park and near a golf course near its estuary into the Moray Firth on the north coast of Aberdeenshire. Banff is a town with a history dating back to the 12th century and was granted a charter by Robert the Bruce in the 14th Century. Once a thriving herring fishing port it is now a quiet town catering more to tourism with its excellent golf course, marina and has several sandy beaches. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. By the December the sun setting has moved much more to the west and in my case is well behind the line of forest on the left. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. Summer Clouds xcv9634jhp Clouds white large shapes white blue sky treetops Aberdeenshire Scottish summer weather and although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. Their shapes, size and often awesome sense of power make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. These clouds taken over the Hill of Fare near Torphins were a morning display which eventually developed into rain clouds which gave a beautiful double rainbow in the late afternoon examples of which precede these photos. NLC Crooktree zxc2931jhp Noctilucent clouds treetops silhouette house silvery NLC summer Scotland night sky photo blue network rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbeldore's Pensive in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white or occasionally red colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking magnetic 45 degrees from Crooktree over Torphins and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, the early show of the morning of 8th July, 2014. Taken at 00.16 UT [after 1am in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with Tokina SD 28-70mm lens at f5.6, 4 second exposure at ISO500. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O樽ount to Mearns. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town with easily accessible forest walks and a not too strenuous walk to its summits with pleasing views of much of Royal Deeside as well as interesting views to the north and south.
