River Nile Minya Egypt Egyptian birds roost branches trees afternoon taken near the hotel overlooking the River Nile as the base for visiting the sites of Bani Hasan and Amarna. There was a pleasant walk along the promenade and it was also fascinating for the huge flocks of small birds that flew in to their roosting trees as evening closed in as illustrated in this photo. We stayed in the Mercure Hotel Nefertiti, an aging hotel which had seen better days and it overlooked the newer chalet type complex called Hotel Aten.

Aberdeenshire Scotland summer sunset clouds colourful red treeline silhouette Kincardine O’Neil Deeside is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most colourful period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. This wide view was taken on the 27th June, 2021 at 21.36hrs UT.

Deeside Scotland autumn sunset red clouds treeline forest silhouette Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. By the end of October the sun setting has moved much more to the west and in my case is well behind the line of forest on the left.

The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different.

Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed; my experience is that the colourful phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings this however is an example of the noise problem from a 4000ISO hand held lazy option. This year there has been several colourful displays in December, the particular photo was taken on the morning of the 11th at around 08.27hrs.

Durris hills Scolty hill Banchory sunshine Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland summer westwards this hillside offers views to Upper Deeside from a dead end back road to Monthammock off the Denside of Durris road near Nibbetstane at the fork to Hilton Farm. This is rural Deeside east of Banchory on the south of the River Dee and the hill to the left just beyond the treeline is Scolty with the town of Banchory creeping in at the right. To the left of Scolty away in the distance is Lochnagar.
