Although we travelled First Class and the seats were undoubtately some of the most comfortable I had had on a train the toilets were probably the worst I have ever experienced anywhere and given the importance of tourism to Egypt and the huge pool of labour available this was an unacceptable lack of standards. El Lisht Camel Train eg00727jhp Lisht village Egyptian life camels transporting palm fronds street scene was spotted driving through the village enroute to the two Lisht pyramids of Amenemhet and Senwsoret on the desert escarpment south of a trip from visiting the Dashur necropolis. Definitely need a great taxi driver who can navigate his way to these outlying sites, finding the local custodian and also managing not to get bogged down in the sand once away from the plantations. It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors. This view is taken by the North Deeside Road from Aberdeen to Braemar adjacent to Crathes Castle. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town and can be seen along this stretch of restored railway line which runs from Crathes, just opposite to the main entrance to Crathes Castle, an important National Trust for Scotland property in North East Scotland. The line stops at the outskirts of Banchory on its eastern face although prior to the Beeching cuts the line ran from Aberdeen west along the River Dee to its terminus at Ballater. Large parts of the disused railway line have now been incorporated in a walking and cycling path called the Deeside Way and offer the enthusiastic rambler a substantial dedicated route from Aberdeen to Ballater. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

Captured by accident returning from dropping friends off at Aberdeen Train Station and spotted the bright sunshine and showers, always a goof oemn for rainbows. The shapes, size and often awesome sense of power of clouds and often couple with rain storms and rainbows make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible and it also appears in the images are short lines as it falls catching the sunlight although in these photos not a problem.
