Today the preferred method for package tours for crossing the River Nile is by the new southern road bridge and then heading north and westwards towards the main ancient sites of the West Bank. The scene is also a reminder of the wealth that was the engine that created ancient Egypt because of the fertility bordering the River Nile caused by the annual inundations with the flood waters depositing fertile mud giving abundant food sufficient to feed the large transient labour force required to build these huge monuments from Giza, Memphis, Thebes and southwards to Abu Simbel. Today fertilisation of the river farmland is by artificial means and of course has an impact on the Egyptian import bills. Thirty nine tombs along the face of a bluff above the River Nile some 20km south of Minya make Bani Hasan a special visiting place for its decorations along the themes of wrestling, battle scenes and the collection of taxes by the nomarchs of the Oryx Nome give some beautiful tomb paintings to view - unfortunately photography was absolutely refused when I visited. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs near the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits. Several New Kingdom were uncovered in this Dutch work and the site is now open to the public including Tombs of Horemheb, Maya and Meryt. This burning of the heather is an annual activity across the Scottish moors and hills allowing short young regenerated heather for easier access for the young grouse. Old heather gets very long, deep and thick and it is impossible for the grouse to eat and get around. On the Cabrach a few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. In the distance eastwards the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort can be seen and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. This photo is taken on the border between Aberdeenshire and Morayshire on the main road between Rhynie and Dufftown.
