Aberdeen Seaton Autumn 1919512jhp Aberdeen City Seaton Park autumn colours Wallace Tower path bench is a wide expanse of parkland lying between the University and River Don to the north of the City in the North East of Scotland. The offers walks and many areas to exercise and enjoy flower displays as well with easy access across the famous Brig O’Balgownie to Donside and the banks of the River Don as it flows eventually into the North Sea. Also in the park is the Wallace Tower, a partial replica of Benholm’s House or Lodging once situated in the Netherkirkgate but demolished in 1964. The present structure incorporates some of the original stonework from this unique z-plan towerhouse and one of the four remaining 16th Century buildings in the City. Grounds are normally open all year round. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. Esslemont Castle qwe3327jhp Esslemont towerhouse ruin Ellon Aberdeenshire Buchan Scotland fort walls photo of this 16th century tower house, viewed from public highway, built on earlier 14th Century site of the Mareschal’s and then passed to the Cheynes of Straloch through marriage. Was destroyed during feud between the Cheynes and Hays in 1493 and later rebuilt. Later owned by Earls of Errol but lost during Reformation conflicts. Later sold in 1728 to Robert Gordon and abandoned in 1769 in favour of a new Esslemont House built nearby. In a very ruined state and best viewed from the A920 just south of Ellon. Ruins in the photograph are from a 16th century castellated round tower of a large mansion house. Area to NW of these ruins was excavated in 1938 by Douglas Simpson and substantial evidence of a large and strong L shaped tower house with pink dressed granite foundations and is considered to be the remains of original castle.
