Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Abydos Ramesses 11 Temple Painting 5415EG07JHP Abydos Small Temple Ramesses 11 prisoners reliefs kneeling tied bound is a 10 minute walk to the NW of the main Sety 1 Temple at Abydos and although much smaller and completely uncovered, it is worth the walk and effort to see it for there are many high quality colorful painted reliefs which are easily accessible and a joy to behold. Probably covered as late as the Napoleonic exploration means the sun and exposure to the elements has not had long enough to destroy the colours completely something that will eventually happen. These are iconic images of prisoners relating to the Battle of Kadesh and his victory story so beloved of Ramesses. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including such as an Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel, the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent large addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] temple for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Luxor Temple is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues at the entrance to the first pylon. Facing the pylon is the long Avenue of Sphinxes attributed to Nectanebo 1 which went completed would have joined up with Karnak Temple and recent reclamation work had established much of this avenue running through the town. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
River Nile Cruiseboat EG052066jhp Egypt Egyptian River Nile cruiseboat livery design names cruise modern photograph the journey from Luxor to Aswan by cruiseboat offers a peaceful way to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. During 2005 I experienced the busiest time on the Nile I had seen with convoys of cruiseboats and this photo is taken at Esna Lock where there was a delay for several hours waiting to make progress southwards. Probably in 2012 following the marked drop off in tourism following the Arab Spring and subsequent political problems scenes like this will not be happening.
