It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. Underneath the temple are a series of passageways and crypts used for the storage of sacred objects and one opening into the vestibule of the Throne of Re is open to the public. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Karnak Fallen Obelisk EG074979jhp Egypt Queen Hatshepsut Granite Obelisk Pyramidion Amun Cartouche Maatkare Karnak Temple is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake and this is what is shown in this photograph. The obelisks were of red Aswan granite and the standing one is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Both encased buy a room covering them in done by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower sections remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. Luckily this has been largely untouched and most of the carvings including Queen Hatshepsut are pristine as she kneels at the feet of Amun with her cartouche on the left shwoing her throne name Maatkare. Karnak Chapel Rouge EG074879jhp Luxor Karnak Egypt Thutmosis cartouche Chapelle Rouge Black granite carving has been partially restored in addition to other small but beautiful chapels and temples in the Open Air Museum, a quiet and contemplative extra to the north east of the main Karnak complex. This is recent major reconstruction situated in the Open Air Museum at Karnak with rescued blocks from the original barque Chapel built by the Pharaoh Hatshepsut and possibly originally cited between her obelisks in the centre of the temple of Amun. The partial reconstruction offers an insight to the beauty and grace of such a building destroyed because of the backlash against her ruling as a ‘male’ King. Rescued blocks were found inside other buildings around the site. Karnak is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. Ramose Tomb Reliefs EG563JHP Ramose Tomb Relief Ancient Egypt Nobles Relief Pharaoh Shrine Sunlight, one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze in the top left-hand corner since then. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Valley Kings EG0213065jhp Egyptian Valley Kings Tuthmosis Tomb sarcophagus cartouche granite red in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor which was robbed in antiquity and later restored by Horemheb through his official Maya. In the Tomb-Chamber is a red granite sarcophagus with still very brilliant colourful decoration as illustrated in the photo of the Goddess Nephthys. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera and adjustments in Photoshop reasonably accurate colours can be exhibited of tomb paintings lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash are not allowed such as the head of Anubis. This was taken before the current ban on tomb photography was introduced when you could purchase a ticket to photograph in two tombs in 2002. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases.
