Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Deeside ab941212ajhp Aurora Borealis British arc active purple rays April 1994 Aberdeenshire taken on the evening of the 5th April, 1994 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north. This photo taken at 23.25hrsUT having started showing activity from 23.15 and this was that final phase of a five minute burst of activity which continued with faint rays until around 00.15hrsUT on the morning of the 6th April. This was one from possibly 7 nights in a row although on the night of the 6th April the cloud cover was so thick that no Aurora could be seen. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP11 processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Aurora over Deeside rty1927jhp Aurora Borealis Northern Lights Scotland streaming green rays Deeside display taken on the 1st October 2012 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen is the first display I have seen this back quarter and probably the best display now photographed since end of the previous Solar Cycle in 2006. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens and ISO settings of 3200 which allows for much shorter exposure circa 6 sec average times with hopefully more accurate recordings of these moving events. The light conditions were not perfect as the background light was from the full moon but dispels any myths that Aurora’s cannot be seen under such conditions. Taken from Ord Fundlie hill track looking westwards as the display peaks with strong streaming on the rays at 00.26.44hrs UT [01.26.44BST] with an exposure of 12 secs. The cloud is beginning to break up and illustrates one of the biggest headaches of Aurora watching anywhere; they are visiible the thick clouds. Located in an ancient quarry from which the stone blocks of the construction of Kildrummy Castle, the huge artificial gully known as the Black Den was initially developed as a feature by the Gordon’s where there was a fishing pond, with various trees and shrubs. Later after the building of a bridge to give access to the New Castle built around the 1900’s by Colonel James Ogston, known in Aberdeen as ‘Soapy Ogston’ of the Aberdeen Soap Manufacturing company and with its close connections to two large hotels of to-day in the area-Norwood and Ardoe House, the gardens were further developed with a Japanese Water Garden and the addition of many new shrubs, trees and flowers. Under James Pearson Smith the modern gardens came under a Charitable Trust in 1968, giving public access in exchange for public donations and entry fee to help pay for the continuing running of the gardens. Overlooking the gardens are the ruins of the Castle and the New Castle, now the Kildrummy Castle Hotel. A small carpark is at the entrance to the road that crosses the bridge and access to the Hotel. The Castle is a Historic Scotland property with its roots set during the peak of medieval European castle construction during the early 13th century. Started by Alexander 11 and possibly later extended after a visit by Edward 1 of England in 1296. It survived many sieges, being burnt and later restored, before being largely dismantled after the Jacobite rising of 1715 when used as the headquarters for the Earl of Mar. It is a magnificent ruin and the scale of the thick walls is particularly impressive despite not being as well preserved as many similar English ruins. This burning of the heather is an annual activity across the Scottish moors and hills allowing short young regenerated heather for easier access for the young grouse. Old heather gets very long, deep and thick and it is impossible for the grouse to eat and get around. On the Cabrach a few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. In the distance eastwards the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort can be seen and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. This photo is taken on the border between Aberdeenshire and Morayshire on the main road between Rhynie and Dufftown. It is accessible by a public track after a steep climb from a signed layby and passes a farm house and outbuildings. This was the year after it was opened to the public after restoration and safety work has been carried and there was still some scaffolding standing on the south boundary wall. These photos were taken on the 20th September, 2008 on which a cloudy start turned into some glorious sunshine, blue skies and interesting clouds so made the walk up worthwhile.
