Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Islamic Glass lamp in Mameluk style with enamelled naskhi test giving the Emir Qusun and his title from the Ottaman period and a specular example of the ancient craftmanship on show in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons.

Exterior wall hieroglyphics text Temple Ramesses Karnak ancient Egypt, on south side of the First Forecourt where it has been joined into the complex having once stood isolated near the Pylon. This photo is of the exterior walls of the Small temple of Ramesses 111 at the east corner which is accessed either through the Bubastite Portal or walking back from Khonsu Temple or perhaps the Sacred Lake. It is now an integral part of the largest religious complex on the East Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in Egypt but when first built would have been isolated as the first pylon of Nectanebo was constructed later. Ramesses 111 Temple was a barque shrine dedicated to Amun in his two most recognised forms, Amun-Re and Amun-re-Kamutef, King of the Gods and Karnak and who is before the harim. On the exterior walls on its western face it has a large scale scene of many boats as they might have been seen during the annual river procession along the Nile from Luxor Temple to Karnak.

Karnak Temple Egyptian Figures Standing Amun Amaunet Sixth Pylon Court near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photo is situated near the sixth pylon on the outer wall of the inner sanctum at the entrance door into the court and towards the Sanctuary of Philip Arrhidaeus. The two standing red snadstone figures are the God Amun and his consort based at Karnak called Amunet or Amaunet. These statues were destroyed in antiquity for certainly that of Amauet was thought lost for ever but pieces have been retrieved in both cases and the statues partially restored. Behind the fgures on the wall relief is text describing the military campaign of Tuthmosis 111 during the years 39-42 of his reign

Karnak Temple Egyptian Sanctuary Wall Tuthmose Maat Palace Carving obelisk near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photo is situated near the sixth pylon on the outer wall of the inner sanctum around various chapels and shrines attributed to Amenhotep, Hatshepsut and Thutmose 111 leading to the central court area but this outer wall has important offering scnes and texts relating to Tuthmose's military campaigns into Syria and Palestine. Captured on this wall is Tuthmose offering gists to Amun such as two obelisks which had their pyramidions coverd in electrum but were eventually removed. This wall is described as the Palace of Ma'at on the UCLA Karnak website but not mentioned as such in either the Blue Book, Murnane or the touregypt sites. Just visible is the top of the obleisk of Hatshepsut.

Court Pylons Wall Reliefs Karnak Temple doorway eighth pylon Roy-Rome priests on the walls in the Court between the seventh and eighth pylons around the doorway into the staircase on the east wing of the Eighth Pylon. On the door lintel are mirror versions of the same person, Roy-Rome, a long serving High Priest to Amun with arms raised in praise but to where a cartouche, now hacked out, would have been. The figures on the right are two priests in linen robes, one of Roy-Rome, the other his son Beknekhonsu offering praise is an extensive area of text which refers to Seti 11. Temple Ptah Karnak Egypt gate solar disc door Thutmosis texts entrance which is located inside the north enclosure wall of the Karnak Complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a delightful small temple and very seldom frequented so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. Constructed by Thutmosis 111 during his reign 1500-1450BC it shows continuous repair and additions through until the Ptolemaic period while inside the small sanctuaries are broken granite states of Ptah and Sekhmet. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast and my batteries also ran out just as I was doing the interior photographs and tut tut, no spares.

Tanis Entrance Gate Exhibits Rear Text Hieroglyphs Ancient Egyptian Delta Northern Egypt once thought to be the capital created by Ramses but was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring.

I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh

The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh.

Senwosret Pyramid Lisht eg012729jhp
Egyptian el-Lisht Pyramid Senusret limestone blocks enclosure wall tombs mastaba Middle Kingdom site which also has the slightly better preserved tomb of Amenemhet 1 nearby. Access to Senusret’s pyramid is through a local village and agricultural land at the edge of the desert escarpment as is common with most of the pyramid sites south of Giza. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh.

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Egypt Esna Temple Nile Ptolemaic back west wall hypostyle hall is a small gem deep in a hollow under the modern town building line. The hypostyle hall is all that remains of one of the latest temples to be built in Egypt by Ptolemy V1 and V111 and Roman additions with recordings of most Roman Emperors mentioned to the last recorded being Decius c AD240. For me it has some of the loveliest intact columns, with great attention of the detail and still a hint of colour from the bottom to the top of these huge floral capitals where the craftsmanship leaps off every surface. Standing in its centre it is easy to imagine being in the symbolic creation of the original papyrus marsh. It is a temple not usually visited on the standard River Nile cruise tour package but used to be accessible if berthed alongside the town with a long delay to get through old single lock system expected as it is only a short walk from the waterfront; probably not so realistic these days.
