Strathdon Autumn vbn1526jhp Kildrummy Castle tower ruin garden beech pine trees Scotland autumn colours Aberdeenshire this attractive park lies’ beneath the ruin of this 13th century castle in western Aberdeenshire. Located in an ancient quarry from which the stone blocks of the construction of Kildrummy Castle, the huge artificial gully known as the Black Den was initially developed as a feature by the Gordon’s where there was a fishing pond, with various trees and shrubs. Later after the building of a bridge to give access to the New Castle built around the 1900’s by Colonel James Ogston, known in Aberdeen as ‘Soapy Ogston’ of the Aberdeen Soap Manufacturing company and with its close connections to two large hotels of to-day in the area-Norwood and Ardoe House, the gardens were further developed with a Japanese Water Garden and the addition of many new shrubs, trees and flowers.
