Deeside Sunset bnm7772jhp Scottish summer sunset dark stormy dramatic clouds sun beam setting hilline Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. Their shapes, size and often awesome sense of power make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. This formation is taken over Aberdeenshire near Montgarrie just north of Alford. The road in the foreground runs northwards from Montgarrie to Whitehaugh Forest and this photo was taken near the entrance to Whiteside Farm and Black Bridge this photo was taken just as you are about to enter Montgarrie. Old Brig Dee Invercauld fgh2962jhp Old Brig River Dee Invercauld Deeside Scotland summer heather stormy clouds is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the summer heather purple and although catching the sunlight the background is dark and stormy. NB This was taken with a non-digital lens and may need extra sharpening. The core tower was built in 1537 and the most striking star-shaped curtain wall dates from 1748 when occupied by the Hanoverian troops tracking down Jacobite rebels. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. Glenbuchat Spring asd6497jhp Glenbuchat Ben Newe summit rocks lichen rural spring Scottish Aberdeenshire looking northwards across this charming glen is accessed off the A939/A944/A97 Ballater/Huntly road just at the entrance to a Historic Scotland maintained castle by the same name. It is open all the year round and is an unmanned property at which no entrance fee is applicable but there is a small carpark. Views of the Glen are seen from the top of the Castle northwards. The Glen itself has a delightful old Kirk which was a favourite of HM The Queen Mother and the road loops round the top of the glen and a traveller can exit the glen at Bellabeg further west along the A944, a continuation of the A97 which forks nearby southwards to Dinnet. River Dee Bridge xvv0964jhp Old Brig O'Dee Invercauld River Dee Summer Photograph Stormy Clouds is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from the modern road bridge which crosses the River Dee to the North.
