Karnak Stored Blocks EG0214082jhp Karnak Temple stored blocks carved rescued carving hieroglyphics star ceiling located adjacent to the mudbrick boundary wall of the Forecourt behind the First Pylon visible in the background in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. These blocks can be infill from many Atenist temples has been removed particularly from the inside of the ninth pylon and much of the area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. Accessed near the delightful small Temple pf Ptah on the North Enclosure of Karnak and as very seldom frequented so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast and it was the only time I have been offered the chance to see this site and was not allowed to explore it. The Ptolemlaic Propylon is visible behind the palm tree on the left and the older main temple of Amenhotep 11 is on the right. Bellabeg Lost wyy6103jhp Bellabeg motte Lost roadsign famous stolen Strathdon Scotland summer farm querky scene just to the west of Bellabeg village crossing the Nochty road bridge by the Spar Grocery store from the main Strathdon road. This roadsign to a farm of this name has been so famous that the council roadsign has disappeared on several occasions. Just to the west of this road is the impressive motte which can be seen from the road. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen.The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring. Bellabeg Motte xcv7218jhp Bellabeg motte fort Doune Invernochty fortress Glenbuchat Strathdon Scotland winter scene viewed from the Glenbuchat Road north of Bellabeg village taking the turning by the Spar Grocery store from the main Strathdon road. The motte can be seen from the road after crossing the Water of Nochty Bridge and after the right hand turn to Lost with its famous sign. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen.
