Ptolemaic Temple EG051874JHP Deir al-Madinah Ptolemaic Temple Inside Enclosure Theban Hills Village Stonebuilt is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Protective Moats qwe8494jhp Fort George moat entrance massive stonebuilt Highlands military base Scotland located near Ardersier and the public access is organised by Historic Scotland although it is an active military base whose massive protective moats are here viewed from principal Bridge entrance to the fort. A very large complex of moats, bastions and buildings with spectacular outlooks to the surrounding sea and countryside it is well preserved historical site and fine example of military construction and it should be as probably the most expensive military fortification built in the Britain. Completed in 1796 and in the context of Scottish history, it appears more a statement of political empowerment to thwart any ambitions of the Highlanders towards future sedition rather than dealing with any likely military threat. Knock Castle Scotland VS1774JHP Knock Castle Tower House Fort Fortress Royal Deeside Aberdeenshire Stonebuilt is a Historic Scotland property to the south of Ballater on Royal Deeside on the Balmoral Estate at Knock Farm accessed from the South Deeside Road. It is a ruin although Prince Charles has recently suggested restoring it which has a sad history of family feuds between Gordon of Knock, the builder of the present tower, whose family was killed in one day and he dropped down dead at the hands of the ‘Black’ Forbes of Strath Girnock who was later killed by Gordon of Abergeldie who inherited the castle and it fell into disrepair. Corse Castle Scotland VN0341JHP Scottish Corse Castle Tower House Fortified Stonebuilt Ruin Turrets Z-Plan is located off B9119 Tarland road-take Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Given that nearby Craigievar Castle is closed during 2008/9 for restoration this might fill a gap as part of the same family and very much in their historical area of Aberdeenshire.
