Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Tut Soldier Guard EG012616JHP Egyptian Cairo Museum standing statue Ka Tut Tutankhamun interior photo from his Luxor Tomb and now in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Painted Carving Iymery EG050945jhp Iymery ancient Egyptian burial wall reliefs boats fishing diving hunting Western cemetery mastaba carvings painted wall reliefs left in this colourful mortuary chapel situated in the Western cemetery between the Great Pyramid and that of Khafre and open to the public and a welcome diversion from the crowds that surround the nearby Pyramid of Khufu. These photographs are a mixture of natural light time-exposures and some using the rare opportunity to light with flash, given the go-ahead by the custodian. They were taken in JPEG’s whereas today I would always use RAW files and having the advantage of a tripod I would always use natural or even mixed light where possible thus avoiding flash hot spots; flash incidentally does not cause damage to the paintings despite many such claims and restrictions. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. Seheil Nubian Guide EG052678JHP Sehel Island Egyptian Nubian Village local guide elderly man photograph with its genuine sense of colour and distinctive desert shapes for buildings that remain cool in the heat of southern Egypt on this island near Aswan amongst the River Nile cataracts. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years. No model release is required for using this photo. The cliffs stick out on a small headland but with sheer drops into the North Sea but offering spectacular views of the sea pounding on the rocks below and views northwards along the coast from Braidon Bay and to the distant Forley Craig beyond Catterline, famous for its seafood restaurant. The lighthouse was built in 1897 by D.A. Stevenson and is still a stylish if sad reminder of the heyday of Victorian Maritime heritage. Its short ‘dumpy’ tower hides a shaft dug into the cliffs underneath which allowed the original clockwork mechanism to operate as described in Jane Geddes’s Deeside and Mearns Architectural Guide. Gallery of Scottish photographs of plants, flowers, such as bluebells, harebells, Dames Rocket, broom, gorse, fox gloves, poppies; trees such as gean, silver birch, pines, Scots Pines, larch, and a few wild animals such as birds, hare, pheasants, roe deer, red squirrels, insects, butterflies such as peacocls, red admirals, tortoiseshell, although I am not a wildlife photographer as such.
Partridge on Dyke xvv1381jhp Partridge red-legged bird Scottish Deeside colours plumage Alectoris rufa standing on a stone wall and showing off its very striking feather patterns from black throat band, red legs and black and white side panels all making it ideal camouflage when running in the undergrowth. This particular bird was brought onto the estate as part of a selection of more interesting birds for the seasonal rough shooting and is not a native of this part of Scotland. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on.
