Stelae Cabinet EG011212JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibits typical cabinets relics painted stele interior photo tucked away on the first floor full of fascinating relics such as these colourful stelae. In the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Luxor New Sphinxes Avenue 5626EG07JHP Luxor Egypt Shinxes Avenue Karnak Recent Excavations Walk Upright Photo have started on the remains of covered part of the Luxor to Karnak avenue of sphinxes and by 2007 over sixty had been uncovered. They appeared to have been deliberately toppled in late Roman times and have been well preserved and many Roman relayed antiquities and buildings have been identified. Remains of an ancient stone road have also been found and a stela indicating the importance of a High Priest of Amun Ra called Bakenkhonsu which has also indicated new dating evidence for the reign of the Pharaoh Sethnakhte [Setnakhte] who ruled between Ramesses 11 and 111 for now it appears four years at least. Luxor Sobek Stele EG962098JHP Egyptian Museum Luxor Stele Stela Sobek Ima Tree Pia Worship Priest was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit was found at Dahamsha at the Sawahel Armant Canal in 1967 and includes the Priest Pia and his son, wife and mother offering to the Crocodile God Sobek and it is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Bent Pyramid Dashur eg9612913jhp Egypt Dahshur Bent Pyramid Sneferu chapel stelae mudbrick wall east side is a famous and very distinct shape with a reduced slope created mid way up, possibly because of the need to complete the construction earlier than expected or its was structurally unsound. It is the most complete pyramid with most of its Tura limestone cladding intact, although some corners and near the top have been plundered but offer a good indicator of how the Giza pyramids would have looked when completed. Near the pyramid on its south side is a subsidiary one, badly degraded, which was found to have not been used and is felt to be too small for the King’s Queen Hetepheres. When I visited the site in 1995, the same year the military allowed tourist visits, the north entrance, there are two, was reached by climbing up the outside of the structure assisted by the helpful guide but I was unable to reach the burial chamber as I did not trust the rope ladder available. Nearby are several other pyramids of which the North or Red Pyramid also of Sneferu [Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty c2613-2494BC] is the older, largest and most intact. The others of much poorer quality are from the Middle Kingdom 12th Dynasty some 600 years later.
