It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of delightful small chapel called New Year Chapel which had a Court of the First Feast as seen in the foreground with court of Pure Place beyound the stairs. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Luxor Tomb EG942813jhp Egypt Egyptian Luxor Tutankhamun Theban hill mountain Valley King Tomb entrance stairs looking into one of the most visited places in the world probably and certainly in Egypt beneath the Theban mountain on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor famous for some of the most important Royal burials of this ancient civilisation and this one if the most famous. It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors. Photograph shows south interior wall with stonewrok, windows, stairwells and upper floor but basic structure is a shell. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. This particular image shows exaggerated converging verticals because of the closeness of the lens and despite it being an ultra wide focal length for given the situation of the castle to steep slopes it is not possible to get far enough away. The effect although not accurate or truth does increase the sense of height and scale.
