Their shapes, size and often awesome sense of power make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. This popular route through the picturesque Glen Dye, passing the most recognisable hill shape of Clachnaben with its tor rocky outcrop and climbing up through heather moorland and new forest plantations and then offering spectacular views of the Mearns and south eastern Aberdeenshire to the North Sea and southwards to Montrose and almost to Dundee and beyond on a clear day from the layby and viewpoint just over the Cairn summit. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking magnetic 45 degrees from Crooktree over Torphins and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, the early show of the evening of 6th July, 2014. Taken at 23.01 UT [ midnight in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with Tokina SD 28-70mm lens at f4, .8 second exposure at ISO500. Glenbuchat Spring asd6495jhp Glenbuchat Kirkton Ben Newe high view rural spring Scotland Aberdeenshire looking into the first part charming glen accessed off the A939/A944/A97 Ballater/Huntly road just at the entrance to a Historic Scotland maintained castle by the same name. It is open all the year round and is an unmanned property at which no entrance fee is applicable but there is a small carpark. Views of the Glen are seen from the top of the Castle northwards. The Glen itself has a delightful old Kirk which was a favourite of HM The Queen Mother and the road loops round the top of the glen and a traveller can exit the glen at Bellabeg further west along the A944, a continuation of the A97 which forks nearby southwards to Dinnet.
