Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Corona Display aucf12613jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish autumnal Corona green rays spread fan huge Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the evening of the 29th October, 2003 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the west. This photo was taken at 22.26.50hrsUT for 14secs showing mainly green oxygen rays from the centre of the Corona fanning downwards like monster wings but sadly not showing the subtle movements continuously going on. The cf126, the first digital set taken, was 13 frames over 13mins, illustrating how busy you can be when a full display is ongoing, photographing from east to west and directly overhead. The display continued throughout the evening into the morning of the 30th October. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 20.15hrs UT towards the west visible through gaps in the extensive cloud cover. This photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my earliest digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. As the display builds into a corona huge spreads of colourful light form rays dropping from overhead to the horizon here looking westwards to the Kincardine ONeil direction. Images in this gallery relate to Aswan in southern Egypt covering the city, the River Nile and related sites except for more important places such as Philae, The Nubian Museum and Seheil Island Rock carvings.
Aswan Elephantine EG004832jhp Elephantine Island Aswan Egyptian script Satet Senusret temple hieroglyphs insert visited during a separate excursion and not usually included in standard Nile package tours. Taking a ferry over and paying for a museum and island visit is straight forward. This photo was taken in 2000 when restoration and excavation was ongoing and is record of progress at that time. It is also interesting to visit the famous Nilometer which was used for recording the start of the annual flooding of the Nile or inundation. The Nilometer is situated directly across from the equally famous Old Nile Cataract Hotel, written about in Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and which featured in the film of the same name. The island would have had strategic importance given its size and predominant position in the centre of the river. There are the remains of several Temples to various Gods associated with the Island, the most notable being Khnum, the ram-headed provincial God of the region, Lord of the Cataract and Hapy, the Nile God. Khnum’s consorts were Satet/Satis and Anuket. Pre-historic remains and carvings have been found and occupation of the Island spanned almost the whole history to Egypt including a gateway showing Alexander 11 and Greco-Roman Necropolis of the Sacred Rams. Considerable occupation of the Island by high officials is evidenced by the spread of houses and shown in some of these photos. There is also evidence of a Jewish settlement from Aramaic papyri finds. A small but interesting Museum exhibits finds from all the periods of occupation and is well worth a visit. No photography was allowed. There is also a garden museum with statues of Middle Kingdom local nomarchs. As several of the photos show is partially restored Temple of Satet with some painted relief blocks in place and the areas not found left a drawings showing figures in position. There was evidence of considerable reusing of older buildings particularly by the ruler Nectanebo 11, see also his naos, and later Alexander and two temples attributed to Amenhotep 111 and Tuthmosis 111 that existed at the time of the French expedition in 1800 where subsequently destroyed during civil unrest. Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed and this winter dawn is a wonderful illustration of just that; my experience is that the colourful phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the very low light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings and overall sharp apertures. Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed and this winter dawn is a wonderful illustration of just that; my experience is that the colourful phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the very low light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings and overall sharp apertures. Deeside Sunset bnm7784jhp Royal Deeside summer sunset cirrus clouds golden orange colours Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. I have seen sparrows also doing a similar thing but on the ground, especially if it is sandy and wondered if it might be to do with cleaning away mites, as part of the sand bath activity-hen pheasants also seem to like this and often create their own sand bowl for regular use.
