Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.

It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of a block of limestone possibly showing repeated sharpening of a sword, knife or bayonet by passing armies such as the mamluks during the Ottoman Empire in the 1800's. Another suggestion is faulty stone showing aggressive erosion. This photo is of reliefs on outside of the west wall of the main temple walking down to the sacred lake and small temple of Isis and at the base shows damage done possibly by the mamluk soldiers sharpening their swords or another theory is erosion from poor quality limestone. Along the promenade are restaurants, berths of cruiseboats, ferry landing areas and to the south the Municipal Gardens, the Coptic Cathedral and the old and new Cataract Hotels, the former of course made famous in the film Death on the Nile. The cartouches on this huge granite boulders near the Nilometer are of Psamtik 11 record his military expeditions into Nubia in 592BC and graffiti from some of his mercanary soldiers has been found on the Abu Simbel Statues. Aswan Museum Model Soldiers EG052939JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum exhibit of model wooden soldiers from the 11th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom inside a modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Tut Soldier Guard EG012616JHP Egyptian Cairo Museum standing statue Ka Tut Tutankhamun interior photo from his Luxor Tomb and now in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. This colourful wall relief of the Queen is at the end of the upper terrace. In these paintings are recorded the Queen’s famous expedition to the Land of Punt, actual location unknown but it was in search of incense and myrrh which are found on both sides of the Red Sea. This was not the first time Egyptians had been to Punt. It is thought that she bought back trees that might have grown in the first two terrace courtyards. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. Karnak Khonsu Erosion EG075045jhp Karnak Temple Luxor Khonsu Carved wall relief erosion damage sharpening swords located to the SW corner of this huge sprawling site on the East Bank of the River Nile near the modern City of Luxor and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This is an interior of the Temple of Khonsu and the temple is worth a visit as it is usually free of crowds, is well preserved and is adjacent to a nicely decorated Temple of Opet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing. Built mainly by Ramesses 111 and 1V but later additions by various kings including the Propylon Gate built by Ptolemy 111 from which an avenue of sphinxes leads to the Precinct of Mut, unfortunately closed to the public. The photographs shows possible erosion of an exterior wall but the deep grooves may also be caused by soldiers sharpening their swords or knives. Luxor Gold of Honour Bearer EG962097JHP Museum Luxor Exhibit Photograph Honor Carving Egyptian Man Statue Beads was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit dates from around 1400 BC recording the yellow beaded necklace symbolising a recognition of valor by a courtier or soldier and is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Being relocated onto the Island of Agilkia on the River Nile near Aswan, to save it being flooded after the completion of the High Dam, it is perhaps one of the loveliest and most complete classic Egyptian temples to visit with a peaceful spirituality lacking in many of the land based sites. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

Braemar Castle Autumn T04290261jhp Braemar Castle fort autumn roadside larch trees bronze Royal Deeside Scottish was built in 1628 by John Earl of Mar was basically a pitched roof over the main tower and some turrets. Later in the 18th century the battlements and unusual star-shaped defensive curtain wall were added. It was forfeited to the crown after the 1715 rebellion and were later sold to the Farquharson’s of Invercauld and rented back to the Crown as a Hanoverian garrison post until 1831. It has a barrel vaulted ceilings, an iron yett, an open wrought iron metal grid, covering an underground dungeon with its bottle neck entrance. Since then it has been a private property until recently by Invercauld Estate and is now run as a tourist attraction by a local community trust after refurbishment with exhibitions reflecting its, and the local area history. As a private property now in the control of a local charity then these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Castle is accessible for exterior viewing all year round with easy parking at nearby carpark but the interiors during summer months at weekends from 11-4 or by prior appointment.
