There was a pleasant walk along the promenade and it was also fascinating for the huge flocks of small birds that flew in to their roosting trees as evening closed in. We stayed in the Mercure Hotel Nefertiti, an aging hotel which had seen better days and it overlooked the newer chalet type complex called Hotel Aten. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed; my experience is that the colourful phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the very low light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings and overall sharp apertures. Auchindoun Castle vs2418jhp Auchindoun Castle ruin prominent hilltop mound ditch skyline outer walls Dufftown Morayshire Scotland autumn walk fence fort with excellent views over Glen and the River Fiddich is located on a possible earlier Iron Age earthwork, built in the mid-1400's as a traditional L-shaped tower house was the centre of many clan feuds and much violence, burnt, restored and abandoned by 1725 now remains an eye catching Historic Scotland property on the Cabrach to Dufftown road, NJ 349 375. It is accessible by a public track after a steep climb from a signed layby and passes a farm house and outbuildings. This was the year after it was opened to the public after restoration and safety work has been carried and there was still some scaffolding standing on the south boundary wall. These photos were taken on the 20th September, 2008 on which a cloudy start turned into some glorious sunshine, blue skies and interesting clouds so made the walk up worthwhile. Tenanted in the early 19th Century but derelict from 1836 and although partially restored to make weather tight has not been occupied since. A Listed in 1972. Ownership was initially by Currour’s, sold to Ogilvies of Dunlugas in 1557, later in 1803 Abercromby of Birkenbog inherited it, later sold to Count Mirrees and on his death sold to Olga Roh in 2013, former Russian model who has plans to renovate it as family home. Has been involved in Historic conflicts namely Royalists v Covenanters in 1640 and Jacobite Rebellion in 1746. Although a substantial ruin now cared for by Historic Scotland remains one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in Scotland. The transepts with their buttressed west towers and parts of the tall choir and nave date from the fire of 1270 but subsequent destruction especially by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390 and later further destruction and neglect after the Reformation means we will never see this building in its true majesty.
