Aswan Nubian Museum Skeleton EG052935JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum grave and skeleton dating to prehistory around 35-3000BC and found at Kubanieh, the 2nd Cataract on the River nIle at Aswan. Semi Nomadic tribe buring dead in oval/rectangular pits of a stone structure and including burial goods just as peronal ornaments made of ivory, faience, bone; shells and coloured stones. An exhibit in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Karanis nr Southern Temple 6437EG07JHP Karanis Kom Aushim Egyptian Desert City Ruins Mudbrick Sand Skeleton on the north eastern edge of the area known as Fayoum and dates from Ptolemaic times through to 500AD. Two Roman dated temples survive in reasonable state and the southern one is dedicated to the crocodile Gods of Pnepheros and Petesuchos. Many finds have been made especially of life in a residential area with houses scattered throughout the site and there is also a fine Roman bathhouse. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. Queens View Tarland UP381009JHP Queens View Tillylodge at the Deeside Field Club marker pointing out the alignment of all the hills visible from the viewpoint is on the road out of Tarland heading north and ultimately takes you east to Aberdeen in North east Scotland. The central outline is of the mountain called Lochnagar, fourth highest in Britain and the distinct hill on the right is that of Morven. Claimed as a favourite viewpoint of Royal Deeside for Queen Victoria and hence it being called the Queens View. Cothiemuir Wood bnm3620jhp Scottish summer Cothiemuir Wood sun backlit oak leaves branch skeleton weird shape walk Keig Donside Aberdeenshire and now the focus for a nearby natural burial site with a spiritual connection going back to Bronze Age ancient Recumbent Stone Circle with altar stone, flankers and some outer monoliths is found deep in the forest off the Keig to Monymusk Road via My Lord’s Throat which runs along the southern side of Bennachie. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. The church and the area where originally called Aberchirder and the congregation were the catalyst for the Disruption of 1834, a major schism in the Scottish Church of the time. Only a gable of the old church remains in the kirkyard and although an active cemetery it does have some interesting historically important ruined tombs and mausoleums including an excellent example of a watchtower dating from 1831, built during the time of body snatching for medical research rife throughout Scotland. Passing another even more spectacular gorge at the Linn of Dee west of Braemar as the road goes deeper into Glen Dee and the Linn is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl. From the Linn it is a slightly longer drive taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge to a new National Trust carpark and the main starting point for walks to Beinn A’Bhuird and beyond.
