Constructed by Thutmosis 111 during his reign 1500-1450BC it shows continuous repair and additions through until the Ptolemaic period while inside the small sanctuaries are broken granite statues of Ptah, which is byond the altar stone and through the door in front and Sekhmet which is in the righthand sanctuary. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast which has happened to me twice now at this temple. Pan bedding was a technique where the bricks mirrored the ground levels and it is also possible to see how additons where made and other areas strengthened as seen towards the top centre. This part of the enclosure wall is at the northern corner and is behind the Open Air Museum. The site of this vast religious complex is near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest site on the Nile. This view is of the Eighth Pylon with its southern face dominated by six colossal figures from Amenhotep 1 to 11 although some are possibly relocated from an earlier pylon. Luxor Tut Arrows EG9620912JHP Egypt Museum Luxor King Tutankhamun Arrows Six Archery Tomb Display was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit includes hunting and military weapons, these six were taken from 278 found in the Valley of the Kings Tomb dating to around 1336BC and are in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
River Nile Cruiseboats EG052095jhp Egypt Egyptian River Nile Esna lock cruiseboats congested cramped many photo taken on the cruise from Luxor to Aswan and at the Esna Lock there was major congestion owing to only one lock in operation which meant many boats were berthed six deep side by side while they waited, although an additional lock was being constructed. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
