The journey through the back streets, military zones and industrial sites was fascinating enough but even the taxi driver had to ask twice for directions. It was eventually not that far from a so-called sculpture park that I had ‘discovered’ the previous year on the same search but failed to find the colossus. There are other quarries and two in the Southern Quarry area of which Tlaina has this unfinished colossus, another statue is at Shallal Quarry while another has an unfinished sarcophagus. It is thought that a fracture in the shoulder of this statue of Ramses 11 might be why it was abandoned and further down the hill an unfinished square base has also been found as well as evidence of a ramp or track way that was being prepared for its transportation when completed. The famous unfinished obelisk is the most interesting because of its sheer scale, if completed it would have been one of the largest ever cut out but it gives an idea of the techniques used to extract these monsters. Around the area are the remains of other stone quarrying showing how holes were cut in the rock in a series of runs that allowed fractures to occur and for the blocks of pink granite to be removed. Diorite, a very hard mineral stone was used as hammer balls to pound the granite and on either side of this obelisk can be seen deep gullies or channels with bowled floors showing the depth penetrated. This obelisk is thought to have been abandoned when a fracture occurred at the very far end. Egypt Giza Sphinx Shoulder Cheops Khufu Pyramid Haunch Side Photo this giant carved limestone lion statue with human head is somewhat of an enigma, but most likely carved out of an outcrop as an inspirational homage to the Pharaoh Khafre some 2500BC whose pyramid is directly behind it, although some attribute it to the previous Khufu who built the first and Greatest Pyramid. This huge prone lion figure with a human face faces the east to the rising sun and the modern day Cairo and is a very popular destination for the thousands that visit the Giza plateau and here viewed from the most accessible point on causeway from Khafre Pyramid to his Valley Temple.

Luxor Karnak Egypt Hatshepsut Queen bargue carvings Chapelle Rouge lettuces has been partially restored in addition to other small but beautiful chapels and temples in the Open Air Museum, a quiet and contemplative extra to the north east of the main Karnak complex. This is recent major reconstruction situated in the Open Air Museum at Karnak with rescued blocks from the original barque Chapel built by the Pharaoh Hatshepsut and possibly originally cited between her obelisks in the centre of the temple of Amun. The partial reconstruction offers an insight to the beauty and grace of such a building destroyed because of the backlash against her ruling as a ‘male’ King. Rescued blocks were found inside other buildings around the site. Karnak is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile.

Tell Basta Pharaoh cartouche Ramses ancient Egypt Delta site photograph at this large complex near the town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well.

Inverurie Easter Auqhorthies Massive Aberdeenshire Recumbent Stone Circle Flankers Altar on the shoulder of a hill in clear site of Bennachie Hill, west of Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. Well signed from the town, with an Historic Scotland carpark and easy access up metalled path. This circular design places the site in the earliest phase of this form of ceremonial and burial monument around 3-2000BC.

Snow Winter climbers Lochnagar col shoulder scree Mountain Scotland Meikle Pap Aberdeenshire Photo taken from the Meikle Pap looking across the lochan and corrie of the fourth highest mountain in Britain with two minute climbers nearing the top of the col on the right-hand side. This mountain is located in the North East Scotland to the south of Ballater and the River Dee with the distant Cairngorm Range in the background. On approaching the saddle above the lochan and looking across at the summit of the mountain range, the Meikle Pap is small climb to the right and does give useful views across the whole front of the mountain and the opportunity from its boulder scree field for foreground interest to create a sense of 3 dimensional depth. This point is an approximate 2-2.5 hour’s walk from the carpark on well defined track to the Fox’s Well and thereafter a conservation constructed pathway.
