Aurora over Scotland (12 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Urban Aurora au74015jhp Scotland Aurora display rays folding arc waning Deeside rooftops shed Aberdeenshire taken over Banchory itself and was active between 1.30 and 2am on the 11th April, 1990. This display was an hour or so after an earlier display which I photographed at The Neuk between 10.40 and 11.30pm on the 10th. This display developed from pulsating patches of light which I noticed from my house on Station Road next to the East Church Manse around 1 to 1.15am BST and which developed into a full blown arc with very strong rays. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left but here creates the curtain like effect with the arc folding to create a horseshoe shape. In the photos the blue colour is of lower level nitrogen gas excitation and with a hint of purple towards the end of the display as against the more common occurrence of red and green oxygen gas. Some of the colour is muted as there was a full moon, the light of which is evident in the brightness of the houses as well as the colour from tungsten lamps from street lights. Of humorous interest is the appearance on bathroom lights while I was photographing in two adjacent houses and neither of the occupants knew a display was underway when I enquired afterwards. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. Aurora Deeside bnm1896jhp Aurora Borealis Scottish shed roof northwards March green double arc Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the evening of 6th March, 2016 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen, starting around 8.00pm, this one at 20.46.53UT, and is the first display since the one that spanned the New Year. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 24mm/28mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 aperture and ISO settings of 3200 which allows for shorter exposures circa 12 sec average times giving more accurate recordings of these moving events. The light conditions were sometimes not ideal because of passing snow flurries but the second burst of activity around 9.30 until nearly 10.00pm was in good clear conditions although cold. It had not been telegraphed from the Spaceweather site which was indicating possible displays caused by the solar wind but likely to occur much further North. During the early stage of the arc developing and going active there were several rays above the viewer but not powerful enough to develop into a half Corona. Constructed by Thutmosis 111 during his reign 1500-1450BC it shows continuous repair and additions through until the Ptolemaic period while inside the small sanctuaries are broken granite states of Ptah and Sekhmet. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast which has happened to me twice now at this temple. Karnak Unfinished Stele EG074857jhp Karnak Temple Egypt First Forecourt stele unfinished Amun plumed headdress by the remains of building ramps on the inside of the unfinished pylon entered from the west and this huge complex is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. In this photo are a row of ram-headed sphinxes, known as crio-sphinxes, as they take the form of ram with a lion's body straddling a small form of the pharaoh here, Ramses 11 in the form of Osiris, in the avenue from the old harbour entry to the temple with the first pylon in the background. The sphinxes were probably originally constructed by Amenhotep 11 or Horemheb but their identity replaced by Ramses 11 and even later again changed by Pinedjem 1, an evolution possibly spanning some 300 years. Deeside-Sunset-wsc2880jhp Deeside Scottish sunset colours orange clouds shapes tree framed is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most colourful period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds but every evening the shapes and nature of the clouds and light is different. This view was taken on the 8th July, 2022 at 21.15 hrs UT. These photos taken in June 2018 show the completed reconstruction following the disastrous fire during the week of 10th May 2015 which all but destroyed the wooden building as can be seen in this photograph, including the Waiting Room Museum, the restaurant area, some small businesses although a replica railway carriage as used by Queen Victoria was saved. The original station was opened in 1866 and closed 100 years later in 1966 following the Beeching Cuts. The Station was as far as the Deeside Railway extended from Aberdeen and allowed Queen Victoria easier access to Balmoral Castle than previously travelling overland from Edzell. It was later used by HM Queen Elizabeth on her annual holidays at the Castle until the Station was closed when the railway line was disbanded in 1966. Happily the new station will once more be a central part of the tourist experience in the town. Ballater lies to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with this fine Scottish medieval door and has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. Next to it is spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees. The shingle banks along the mouth of the Spey are ever changing owing to longshore drift with the constant threat of the river outlet being closed and the area is known for salmon netting at the Tugnet spit as well extensive bird life. Once of several small cottages and crofts on this delightful road west of Braemar through Glen Dee which passes the entrance to Mar Lodge and after the Linn of Dee continues back alongside the north side of the river until it reaches the public carpark at the Quoich. It is open all the year round and is an unmanned property at which no entrance fee is applicable but there is a small carpark. Views of the Glen are seen from the top of the Castle northwards. The Glen itself has a delightful old Kirk which was a favourite of HM The Queen Mother and the road loops round the top of the glen and a traveller can exit the glen at Bellabeg further west along the A944, a continuation of the A97 which forks nearby southwards to Dinnet.
