Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Fisheye au92039jhp
Aurora Borealis Scotland display half Corona fisheye eastwards zenith Plough stars above chimney Aberdeenshire taken on the 2nd February, 1992 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from west to north and slightly towards the east where the street lights of Torphins are visible in the lower part of some uprights. The display was a major storm almost from the start, visible around 11pm and I used my ‘cheap’ fisheye lens, a door security viewer attached to the sunhood on my 28mm by a machined cap. Not of course ideal quality but gives a sense of the scale of the display and especially if viewed seeing the smallness of The Plough. This sequence is later in the display starting around 11.30 when the display grew in strength and the colour red for higher level oxygen came to the fore. An earlier sequence with more green dominance has yet to be scanned. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP 11 rated at 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds.

Egypt > Egyptian Museum Cairo (1 file)

Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Sheshonq 1 Falcon Mummy EG11805JHP
Egyptian Museum Exhibit pasteboard coffin Sheshong 1 Tanis falcon Horus in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour.

Photographs of the three Giza pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx, temples, Solar Barque museum and western cemetery mastabas, including the Light and Sound Show night views.

Iymery doorway painted carving cattle boat water she pool Giza Egypt Western cemetery mastaba carvings painted wall reliefs left in this colourful mortuary chapel situated in the Western cemetery between the Great Pyramid and that of Khafre and open to the public and a welcome diversion from the crowds that surround the nearby Pyramid of Khufu. These photographs are a mixture of natural light time-exposures and some using the rare opportunity to light with flash, given the go-ahead by the custodian. They were taken in JPEG’s whereas today I would always use RAW files and having the advantage of a tripod I would always use natural or even mixed light where possible thus avoiding flash hot spots; flash incidentally does not cause damage to the paintings despite many such claims and restrictions.

This colourful wall relief of the Queen is at the end of the upper terrace. In these paintings are recorded the Queen’s famous expedition to the Land of Punt, actual location unknown but it was in search of incense and myrrh which are found on both sides of the Red Sea. Karnak Temple Sandstorm EG0214013jhp
Karnak Egypt Chapel gate sandstorm dramatic light hypostyle palms hazy which is located inside the central enclosure wall of the Karnak complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light.

The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC.

Egypt Queen Hatshepsut Granite Obelisk Pyramidion Amun Cartouche Maatkare Karnak Temple is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake and this is what is shown in this photograph. The obelisks were of red Aswan granite and the standing one is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Both encased buy a room covering them in done by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower sections remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. Luckily this has been largely untouched and most of the carvings including Queen Hatshepsut are pristine as she kneels at the feet of Amun with her cartouche on the left shwoing her throne name Maatkare.

Egypt Museum Luxor Exhibit Carved Block Hatshepsut Obelisks Karnak Amun was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit shows the Queen on the left and Amun on the right with two standing obelisks at Karnak one of which still stands and is similiar to blocks now in the reconstructed Chaple Rouge while this one is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions.

Egypt > River Nile Cruise & Sites (6 files)

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Ballater Old Station summer sunny finished rebuilt fire destroyed Deeside Scotland Aberdeenshire town which is some 40 miles west of Aberdeen in Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland. These photos taken in June 2018 show the completed reconstruction following the disastrous fire during the week of 10th May 2015 which all but destroyed the wooden building as can be seen in this photograph, including the Waiting Room Museum, the restaurant area, some small businesses although a replica railway carriage as used by Queen Victoria was saved. The original station was opened in 1866 and closed 100 years later in 1966 following the Beeching Cuts. The Station was as far as the Deeside Railway extended from Aberdeen and allowed Queen Victoria easier access to Balmoral Castle than previously travelling overland from Edzell. It was later used by HM Queen Elizabeth on her annual holidays at the Castle until the Station was closed when the railway line was disbanded in 1966. Happily the new station will once more be a central part of the tourist experience in the town. Small Tortoiseshell bnm9177jhp
Butterfly small tortoiseshell colourful rear view blue chevrons buddleia feeding Scotland August summer photograph as they feed and fly eratically between different buddleia bushes and they hardly settle and are moving all the time so awkward to photograph. So far I have counted only a pair of them on my several buddleaias and these are the second brood of the year as the first appear much earlier in the summer. Numbers overall are better this year, 2017, although still down on 20 years ago when 100plus was not unusual. So far this year I have counted over 50 at one time, mainly Peacocks and Red Admirals with a couple of Small Tortoiseshells and one Dark Green Fritillary but some good sunny spells seems to have got them active. One surprise was to find a Golden Ringed Dragonfly hanging from a buddleia early in the morning, no movement of any kind while I photographed it but it had gone 10 mins later when I came out again.

Raemoir Monument xcv9843jhp
Scotland battle memorial Corrichie Aberdeenshire roadside granite forest clear felled heather situated by the B9125 Garlogie to Torphins road running along the left of this photo is to the north of the road at the base of the Mither Tap/Hill of Fare. Now more prominent than usual as the area around this imposing granite monolith has been clear felled. There is a slight rough layby by the roadside allowing access up a grassy path amongst broom and heather.
The monument was erected in 1951 by the Deeside Field Club to commemorate the Battle of Corrichie
of 1562 between the forces of Mary Queen of Scots lead by the Earl of Moray who beat those led by the Gordon’s of Huntly, in several battles between the Reformation and a possible Catholic resurgence.
Inscribed on the stone in Gaelic are “Cuimhnichibh La Coire Fraoichidh” translated as Remember the Day of Corrichie. Although Queen Mary is claimed to have sat and watched the battle she was in fact in Aberdeen and both the ‘Queens Chair’, a granite outcrop on Berry Hill and Queen Mary’s well are probably fictional creations.

Although Queen Mary is claimed to have sat and watched the battle she was in fact in Aberdeen and both the ‘Queens Chair’, a granite outcrop on Berry Hill and Queen Mary’s well are probably fictional creations.

Raemoir Monument xcv9838jhp
Scotland battle Corrichie Aberdeenshire roadside granite monument forest heather situated by the B9125 Garlogie to Torphins road to the north of the road at the base of the Mither Tap/Hill of Fare.

Corgarff Sheep Field VS2704JHP
Corgarff Castle Sheep Desolate Windswept Aberdeenshire Historic Scottish fortified fort just off the A939 Ballater/Tomintoul road with a commanding position over this strategically important route to the north. The core tower was built in 1537 and the most striking star-shaped curtain wall dates from 1748 when occupied by the Hanoverian troops tracking down Jacobite rebels. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation.

As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.

River Spey Estuary Bay Shingle Stones Smooth Sea Erosion Tumbling Wash enters the Moray Firth near the villages of Garmouth and Kingston, small fishing hamlets amongst the shingle banks of this Morayshire north coast. Garmouth has the historical link with the landing of Charles 11 in 1650. The shingle banks along the mouth of the Spey are ever changing owing to longshore drift with the constant threat of the river outlet being closed and the area is known for salmon netting at the Tugnet spit as well extensive bird life.

Glen Dye Spring bnm7010jhp
Glen Dye Charr Burn gorse yellow spring Scottish Aberdeenshire summer May taken on the Cairn O’Mount stretch of road just before the steep hill down to the Spital Brig, looking across to the Charr Burn and a very typical part of the grouse and deer moorland and forestry Glen Dye estate located between Banchory on Royal Deeside and Fettercairn in Mearns. The road crosses over the moorlands peaking at the Cairn O’Mount with a viewpoint for views southwards to the coast near Montrose and the whole of the flat fertile Howe of Mearns plain south as far as Dundee. Looking over the very narrow single lane Spital Brig is an old ruin by the Spital Burn which once was a ‘Spital’ or Hospital, a hostel for weary travellers either crossing the Cairn drove road or herdsmen moving cattle south to the Lowland Markets. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. The small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s.
