Photos in this gallery are of Edfu Temple, one of the best preserved in Egypt, and usually the first first visit after leaving Luxor ona Nile Cruise.
Edfu Pylon Gods EG052249JHP Edfu Temple Pylon Ancient Egyptian Ptolemaic Gods Horus Sekhmet Photograph viewed from the south with carvings of Hathor, several versions of Horus and the lion God Sekhmet and is located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Tut Golden Lioness EG11703JHP Egyptian Cairo Museum Tutankhamun Exhibition seated gold Sekhmet lioness goddess from his Luxor Tomb in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Karnak Ramesses 111 Temple EG0214074jhp Gods Thoth Khnum Sekhmet Temple Ramesses 111 Karnak Seshat Egypt, on south side of the First Forecourt where it has been joined into the complex having once stood isolated near the Pylon. This photo is of the exterior walls at the east corner which is accessed either through the Bubastite Portal or walking back from Khonsu Temple or perhaps the Sacred Lake. It is now an integral part of the largest religious complex on the East Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in Egypt but when first built would have been isolated as the first pylon of Nectanebo was constructed later. Ramesses 111 Temple was a barque shrine dedicated to Amun in his two most recognised forms, Amun-Re and Amun-re-Kamutef, King of the Gods and Karnak and who is before the harim. On the exterior walls on its western face it has a large scale scene of many boats as they might have been seen during the annual river procession along the Nile from Luxor Temple to Karnak. This photo is taken from the outside of the hall on the northern side of the Temple where most of the inscriptions are related to Seti 1 and his various military campaigns in Syria and Palestine as well as making offerings to the God Amun and Isis as well as Sekhmet, Ma'at and Ptah and the hall is viewed from the gate on this side. This detail shows the God Bes holding the vase possibly offering protection to the recipient or in his role as a merrymaking God. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast which has happened to me twice now at this temple. On the path to the Open Air Museum reached through the eastern gate of the first courtyard are many relics found in the huge sprawling site and these are statues of the Lioness Goddess Sekhmet or Sakhmet. Originally established as a Memphis deity along with the feline Goddess Bastet. She was the warrior deity giving the Pharaoh's great heroism in battle. Tuna el-Gebel Petosiris Relief 6280EG07JHP Necropolis Tuna el-Gabal Temple Petosiris Carving Wall Outer Sekhmet Offering Scene is City of the Dead with various chapels, temples and catacombs for animal mummies and many more which are still buried and unexcavated under the desert sands. This photo is an exterior relief on the tomb-chapel of Petosiris here offering to Thoth for whom he acted as a High Priest dating to around 300BC. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. Valley Kings EG0213047jhp Egypt Egyptian Tomb KV19 Montu-hir-Khopshef Sekhmet Sakhmat lioness painting colour was son of Ramasses 1X, but his tomb was unfinished but has some excellent colourful depictions of the important ancient Egyptian Gods and although protected by Perspex panels, the custodian was very helpful and slid them back for me to take photographs in 2002 when it was still allowed. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera, the first and only chance I have had to use one, a Fuji S2 as photography is now banned in the Valley of Kings per se and especially in the tombs. Adjustments in Photoshop give the chance of reasonably accurate colours even when the tomb paintings were lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash were not allowed; what could I get with a Nikon F700 and a tripod, which were allowed at one time as well.
