Karnak Amenhotep 11 Temple EG075038jhp Karnak Temple Sed festival Amenhotep 11 columns fourth court pylons located on the transverse axis south from the main central area between the ninth and tenth pylons on the east wall of the fourth court in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is looking over the fourth court from the around the eighth to tenth pylons largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. The Jubilee Temple of Amenhotep possibly for the Sed festival has been recently excavated and partially restored and is thought to have been physically moved, stone by stone, from near the eighth pylon by Horemheb when the ninth pylon was added. Although the original temple is attributed to Amenhotep 11 it was later dammaged by the Atenists and then repaired by Sety 1. It is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including this one of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel of whom little is recorded, who ruled around 1550-24BC and although his mummy was found in the 1881 royal mummy cache but this beautiful small chapel is one delightful reminder of his 25 year reign. There is another alabaster chapel from the reign of Thutmosis 1V, the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Tell Basta Sed Festival Carving EG077114JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple sed festival carving photograph Egyptian Delta site located at ancient town of Bubastis is a large complex near the modern town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. Corsedardar Finzean 198331jhp Feughside Corsedardar hill Aberdeernshire Dardanus Scots King broken marker burial is on a popular drive between Finzean and Aboyne following the B976 westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. The broken stone partly repaired with iron bands and cement after workmen broke it is supposed to stand in its original position and across from the modern War Memorial; nearby is a Millennium standing stone. The broken stone is claimed to have marked the place nearby where an early Scottish Pictish King Dardanus was killed circa AD75, according to Hector Boece’s History of the Scots 1527, because of his cruelty and universal dislike. This whole legend is beyond determining as fact. Slightly south west downhill of this and in the forest is a Long Cairn possibly dating to c.4000BC. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day.
