This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.

The University complex is located to the northern area of the modern City lying south of the River Don. These 18th century houses were sympathetically restored in 1965 and add great character to this iconic part of Old Aberdeen. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. The Lecht ski centre is also one of the busiest centres on the south side of the Cairngorms during Scotlands often ill-defined and variable winter season but during the summer months is a favourite route with the famous humpbacked single track bridge at Gairnsheil, the purple flowering heather moorland between there and Cock Bridge, past Corgarff Castle and then after Tomintoul, the Bridge of Brown, after passing through Glen Avon. Obviously avoid damaging crops although access should be left. Wonderful panoramic views over Aberdeenshire and Donside to the south and west with the hill of Bennachie in centre distance. The general view many years after this photo to Bennachie has been ruined by an inappropriately situated huge metal barn and a good illustration at the thoughtless planning permission rules operated in Aberdeenshire. Glassel Stones 1917336jhp Glassel Stones stone circle Scotland forest setting sunlight mysterious lies near the Canny Burn or stream opposite to the entrance to Glassel House on the Banchory to Torphins backroad. Accessed through commercial forest it requires some walking through rough ground and after clear felling some 15 years after this photo the ambience of this ancient site has been removed. An early transitional phase after recumbent stone circles with possible evidence of a cist burial lid lying in the centre foreground; it was excavated in 1904. Obviously avoid damaging crops although access should be left. Wonderful panoramic views over Aberdeenshire and Donside to the south and west with the hill of Bennachie in centre distance. The general view now to Bennachie has been ruined by an inappropriately situated huge metal barn and a good illustration at the thoughtless planning permission rules operated in Aberdeenshire. Pictish Carvings Crichie Scotland TO187049JHP Pictish Carved Stone Broomend Crichie Beast Crescent Symbolism Aberdeenshire Scotland Photo shown here is a beautifully crafted and preserved carving dating from c600AD with beast and crescent is located in the centre of the Broomend of Crichie Ceremonial henge near Inverurie, north of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It was relocated to the henge for safe keeping during Victorian times. The site has been recently excavated by Reading University and more cremated bones in complete urns have been found. Accessed through commercial forest it requires some walking through rough ground and this is how they appear after recent clear felling adjacent to the site. They were reckoned to be an early transitional phase after recumbent stone circles with possible evidence of a cist burial lid lying in the centre foreground; it was excavated in 1904. It is situated on the edge of Leuchar Moss. Excavated in 1934, evidence was found of cremation in a series of kerb cairns and from wood charcoal analysis it is suggested this occurred at different times in history. Dated from 2nd Millennium BC, it is argued it was a later development of the more common Recumbent Stone Circles. This site is cared for by Historic Scotland and is open to the public with easy access from the nearby public road. This particular bird was brought onto the estate as part of a selection of more interesting birds for the seasonal rough shooting and is not a native of this part of Scotland. A pair that hung around my cottage did breed and had a clutch of chicks although sadly they survived only a few days as it was the year I also had a feral Scottish Wild cat resident. One interesting problem I had was the male flying at my conservatory window seeing a reflection of itself and presumably seeing it as competition-I had to stick a sheet of paper over the outside of the glass until it moved on. Loanhead Daviot zxc4666jhp Loanhead Daviot stones cremation cemetery enclosed photograph Scottish Aberdeenshire located near the village of Daviot, west of Inverurie on the B9001 Rothienorman Road. Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Given that nearby Craigievar Castle is closed during 2008/9 for restoration this might fill a gap as part of the same family and very much in their historical area of Aberdeenshire. Craigievar Beating Retreat 71931JHP Craigievar Castle Pipeband Bagpipes Kilts Drum-major Beating Retreat Scottish Aberdeenshire event on National Trust for Scotland property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round. This was an occasional event by a local pipeband beating retreat at the close of the season. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. Castle Fraser is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 16 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. This building dates from between 1575 and 1636 is the “most elaborate z-plan castle” in existence in Scotland today and was the work of two master masons or builders called Bell and Leiper.
